Video Editing Practice

 Video Editing Practice

Learning Premiere Pro

To learn how to use Premiere Pro, I watched a series of videos from the Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting. These videos were tutorials on how to do basic actions in Premiere Pro. I also created the 48 second clip at the top of the post to practice these new techniques. Finally, I explored the different features on my own after I completed the clip.

Creating the Clip

First, I created a Pineapple Whip folder and sub-folders for my raw footage, projects, and exports. Then, I uploaded all of the raw footage to that folder, and I started watching them. I created a general outline of how I wanted to organize the footage for my clip on a paper. Next, I started putting the main clips I wanted in order. After I did this, I added extra clips of B-Roll to make the transitions between interviews - or an interview and a clip of B-Roll - smoother.

Struggle and Success

    Challenges:

The thing I struggled with the most was adding Lower Thirds for the manager because I couldn't find the right tools to add it. Then once I found the graphics, I struggled to edit the text. I watched the video three times to figure out how to properly add the graphics. But now, I finally understand how to add Lower Thirds, so I shouldn't struggle with that again.

    Successes:

One thing that I was able to pick up on really easily was how to layer the B-Roll clips to make the transitions between clips of B-Roll and the interviews less noticeable. I was also able to control the tracks for both the video and audio well. Finally, I successfully was able to import media and sources as well as manipulate my workspace to make my creative process easier.

What I Learned

Because this was my first time using Premiere Pro, I learned a majority of the basics of the software while creating this project. For example, I learned how to perform basic actions and manipulate certain aspects of the workspace. I personally struggled with adding Lower Thirds, so I learned how to do that through completing the project as well.

Major Take Aways

One major take away I got from completing this project is that it is important to organize your workspace and stay organized throughout your creative process. I also learned that it is very important to know how to layer tracks in order to smoothen hard transitions that might be visually unappealing. Finally, the most important take away I got was that you have to be very patient and meticulous when you create projects to ensure that they come out exactly as you want them.

How This Helps With my Portfolio Project

This helps me with my portfolio project because I plan on doing the 2-minute film opening. Learning how to use Premiere Pro now will provide me with more time to practice using the software before starting my portfolio project. This will, in turn, help me be more efficient, organized, and experienced when I'm creating my film opening.
